April 14, 2008 in industry news, showcase

We have 48 records in the Multimedia Examples database right now. I thought I’d pull a couple out and showcase them on the front page. If you have an example you’d like to submit, do so here.

Timeline-ness

washington square news timeline

The Washington Square News at NYU published a timeline of their coverage of a student council scandal using Simile, a timeline program created by some students at MIT. Simile uses xml files to create the sliding timeline. It’s a bit complicated, so if you’re not up on xml and coding, you can do something similar with xtimeline This is a good way to recover some of your reporting on an ongoing scandal without linking to each previous archived story in new story updates. Just add the stories to the timeline, and put the link to the timeline into each subsequent story.

Election interactive

marquette interactive

The Marquette Tribune created an interactive Flash graphic of the presidential campaign, with a variety of interesting features. Mouse over the map, and it shows primary results from each state. Mouse over the names below the candidate photos and you get a window with information about the candidates.

Doane and FAU: multimedia examples

June 13, 2007 in showcase, Websites

A couple of multimedia examples from disparate regions of the country that I’ve been meaning to get to:

doane

David Swartzlander, adviser at Doane College in Nebraska, sent a link to this multimedia story. Here are his words:

In January 2007, eight students and I drove in a van from Crete, Neb. to Alabama to research the origins of the modern civil rights movement. Our original goal was to produce 16 pages of a magazine, a traditional print format, that discussed what we learned while visiting Montgomery, Birmingham and Selma, Ala., and to ask whether Dr. Martin Luther King’s “dream” had become reality.

Along the way, the budget for the magazine got cut from 16 pages to eight, so David and his students revisited their goals and produced the multimedia project linked above. Could it use some work? Sure. But it’s a good step for a small school.

Second, as Michael Koretzky said in his e-mail: “The summer staff here at FAU has started publishing completely online issues around a Flash theme.” Check it out at this link. Click on the summer entertainment guide banner at the top of the page (no direct link, sorry) for a full taste of the Flash-enabled site that eventually leads back to their CP-enabled CMS.

Daily Tar Heels’ interactive voter guide

February 10, 2007 in Multimedia views, showcase, Websites

The Daily Tar Heel at UNC-Chapel Hill has some new multimedia editors, and they’re churning out some interesting projects. This is a Flash-based student election voter guide, complete with audio from each candidate.

Even if you don’t have someone who can program Flash and create something this interactive, there’s no reason you can’t collect audio, video and information and put it into a section on your web site, or even in a separate weblog.

An earlier example: the IDS Editor-In-Chief guide.

Technician takes the KK challenge – audio slideshow

February 2, 2007 in showcase

The NC State Technician produced an audio slideshow of a campus event that’s slightly gastronomically challenging. Check it out: Krispy Kreme Challenge.

Technician adviser Brad Wilson wrote to the CMA listserv:

But, from my point of view, our student photographers took a giant leap when they produced an audio-visual presentation of the event. (The challenge is: run two miles from our Bell Tower to the Krispy Kreme store, the second one ever built. Then eat a DOZEN doughnuts. Then run back the two miles to the Bell Tower.)

… The comments from the pros have been very good. For a first attempt, it’s really neat and was easy to do. Generally people feel it’s a bit long and maybe there’s a bit of repetition in some of the images. Some people didn’t like the puke photos but realize that they’re an integral part of the race. (I could tell you stories . . . .)

UW Daily videocasting

January 26, 2007 in Multimedia views, showcase, Websites

While in Vancouver, UW’s Kristin Millis mentioned that the Daily was going to begin producing a videocast every day starting this week. You can check it out here: The Daily Videocasting.

Millis said the entire set-up cost less than $1,000. I’ve e-mailed her to get some more information, and hopefully we’ll find out how they run the system in the future. I do know that they’re using Final Cut Pro instead of iMovie.

WKU multimedia samples

Western Kentucky is known for great photojournalism. Their student newspaper consistently wins awards. During the fall semester, they featured multimedia projects on a separate site: VisualVoice. They were using video, still photos and audio interviews early, as in this example from the WKU-Georgia football game, and this mud volleyball package. They also have some Soundslides efforts, so you can spend some time on the page and get some ideas.

One thing I would suggest is that, when you’re doing multimedia, spend a few seconds at the beginning of the package on a title – an intro slide, if you will – that gives some kind of sense of what it’s all about, as the Herald staffers did with this later package on college drinking. You can be creative with this – put the title over a photo in Photoshop, for instance.

UPDATE: be sure and check out Mindy McAdams’ comment for a link to a psd file that can be used as a title slide for Soundslides.

Showcase: The George-Anne Daily

December 4, 2006 in showcase, Websites

My colleague Bill Neville pointed out the new site design of the George-Anne Daily, Georgia Southern’s student newspaper. The site was built by “attack web geeks” (Bill’s words) using PHP/MySQL. You can see some of their multimedia efforts on this page.

They also have interactive web classifieds.
