CICM contest 2.0 submission form now live

March 25, 2009 in CICM shop talk, contests

UPDATE: The contest is open to student journalists from other countries (by fiat – i.e., me) as long as the content was published in a college news media outlet (i.e., not a class project). So it’s the International contest – first of its kind, AFAIK!

For details about the contest, read this post.

The form for submissions for the most comprehensive online college journalism contest ever is now live.

Here’s the link.

Deadline for entries is May 15. Entries must have been published in the 08-09 school year, and are open to all who are associated with college media organizations. (read the link for more details)

Good luck. Winners will be announced early in the fall semester.

Okay, so we got this a little earlier than I had planned, but here’s the scoop. Beginning MARCH 15, the official CICM College Media Online Journalism Contest 2.0 will be open for business.

The fee for entry will $30 per college media outlet – that includes TV, Radio, Online-only, or Newspaper (am I forgetting anyone?) There is no membership requirement. It’s open to all college media outlets.

Two entries per category per outlet (with one freebie thrown in because we’re nice. :-) ). If you want to enter more, you will pay an additional fee. Deadline for entries is May 15. That means you have two months to get your stuff together! Entries must have been published in conjunction with a college media outlet (read no class projects unless they’ve been published by the campus college media!).

Also, note that there are two additional categories this year: multimedia journalist of the year and webmaster of the year. Rock on! I’ll have a list of judges coming soon as well. Winners will be announced at the beginning of the fall semester.

Details of each category are again presented below the fold:

A couple of additional details about v. 2.0 of the most comprehensive college media online contest evah!

First, the fee will be a flat $30 per school for entries. We will have a limit of entries per category per journalist, just to keep folks to submitting their best work.

Second, and more importantly, we have two new categories! Multimedia Journalist of the Year and Web Editor of the Year!

Multimedia Journalist of the Year: Recognizes continuing excellence by a single college media staff member. Contestants must submit the URLs of three projects which they designed/wrote/edited in any of the other contest categories. Focus will be on use of new/multimedia to report journalistically.

Web Editor of the Year: Recognizes continued excellence in developing the web presence of a college media outlet. Contestants must submit the URL of the web site, along with an explanation of steps they took to ensure quality in design and multimedia use on the web site. Special projects such as databases, Flash packages and the like will be considered. Also, a letter of recommendation from an adviser or editor in chief.

The official form to enter will go up later this week. We’ll let you know when it’s ready.

The most comprehensive college media online contest evah 2.0: Watch this space

February 3, 2009 in CICM shop talk, contests

Coming up later this week, we will roll out the second edition of what is to this point the most comprehensive contest for online content produced by student media and student journalists.

Check below the fold for the categories. As with last year, we’re intent on getting some of the top names in online journalism to judge the contest, and excited about getting recognition out to those in collegiate student media who are doing awesome things online. This year’s deadline will be in May, with the winners to be announced at the beginning of the Fall semester.

This year, we’re opening the contest to all college media outlets. There will be a nominal fee for entry. Stay tuned to this space for more details. In the meantime, start thinking about your entries!

Robert Henri on contests

April 10, 2008 in contests, industry news

A quote from one of those “out of discipline” books I grab every so often to read for inspiration – “The Art Spirit” by Robert Henri:

To award prizes is to attempt to control the course of another man’s work. It is a bid to have him do what you will approve. It affects not only the one who wins the award, but all those who in any measure strive for it. It is an effort to stop evolution, to hold things back to the plane of your judgment. It is a check on a great adventure of human life. It is negative to the idea that youth should go forward. It is for the coming generation to judge you, not for you to judge it. So it must happen, whether you will it or not.

If you want to be useful, if you want to be an encouragement to the deserving young artist, don’t try to pick him or judge him, but become interested in his effort with keen willingness to accept the surprises of its outcome.

This being the first year of the CICM multimedia contests, I hope we did alright by our entrants.

Contests are something we all have to face in journalism, but the key is not the contests, but the content and the creativity we use to tell stories. And ultimately, if the story is great (like the investigative stories published by the Washington Post that won them 6 Pulitzers), but nothing changes, then that big shiny medal isn’t worth a damn.

ONA awards open for entries

April 8, 2008 in contests

onaThe Online News Association is accepting entries for the 2008 Online Journalism Awards, with a May 31 deadline. All the details are here. The sole category for student journalists is here:

11. Student Journalism
This category honors excellence in digital journalism by a student or team reporting on a single story or issue. The work must have appeared originally in a student- or school-based Web site and have been created by full-time student(s) (at the time of publication). Unpublished entries do not qualify. One award

Cost to enter varies depending on web traffic and ONA membership.

With the exception of the 2003 Arizona State Webdevil win, all of the winning student journalism projects have been completed outside student media outlets. I’ve seen some great examples of online journalism coming out of student media over the last year, so hopefully someone will represent this year.

UWire seeking 100 best college journalists

March 20, 2008 in contests

uwire100UWire is looking for nominations for the top 100 college journalists in the U.S.

UWire’s Ben French writes:

The finalists will be featured in a large special on UWIRE.com, named in an article in “Editor & Publisher” magazine, and be touted via a CBS News segment. We feel this is a great opportunity for aspiring journalists to get their names out there and put an extra notch on their resumes.

Nominations can come from peers, advisers or professors, and the finalists will be selected by UWire staffers. Deadline is April 11. Here’s more details in the FAQ.

It would be nice if some online journalists could make the list. I could name at least three or four off the top of my head from schools around the country.
