CoolIris: “3D” visual search

September 18, 2008 in software

ScreenShot with PiclensImage by haglundc via FlickrMy colleague Brian Poulter pointed me to this new service called CoolIris (formerly PicLens). Installed on your computer, it acts as a visual browser, letting you search photos and videos from around the web in a “3d” panel mode (I wish people would stop using the term “3D” to describe visual effects that happen on a 2-dimensional screen that simulate 3D. It works through a Firefox extension, and you can add a plug-in for WordPress weblogs as well, which will create a slideshow using images you upload into a blog post. #

Although I installed the plug-in here, it doesn’t appear to work correctly at present. Could be an issue with PHP. We’re looking to upgrade the blog to a newer version of WordPress soon, so I’ll see what I can do to get it fixed. #

If you want to see an example of how CoolIris looks, you should be able to click the “start slideshow” link below. #
