College newspaper bowl coverage

December 30th, 2007 by Bryan

UPDATE: UWire is hosting a “Bowl Bender,” which features student journalists blogging about each of the bowl games. Check it out here.

As a bowl weekend project, I’ve put together a spreadsheet of all the colleges who are in the bowl games this year, along with links to their student newspaper web sites and (where possible) links to their bowl coverage. It’s a Google spreadsheet, available here.

A few things of note:

  • Sixteen states had no bowl teams, according to my count: Alaska, Delaware, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, Washington, Washington, D.C., and Wyoming.
  • I did my best to find up-to-date bowl coverage that was more than a single story. If I missed something special that you’ve been doing, drop a note in the comments and I’ll update the spreadsheet.
  • At several student newspapers, I couldn’t access the sports section to see about their coverage because of internal server errors, which seems to be a continuing, intermittent problem with College Publisher.
  • The service academies (Air Force and Navy) do not have student newspaper web sites that I could find.
  • Student newspapers vary in their coverage. Some have additional multimedia efforts, some have dedicated sections of their web sites, and some have nothing at all that I could find.
  • Organization is a challenge to finding information. Many of the sites had stories (previews, re-caps, photos) about their bowl games, but no central location to find the information. As well, stories and multimedia were sometimes updated, but not linked to each other. It’s a good idea to link a slideshow to the accompanying story.
  • The best organization I found was at Kansan.com, the University of Kansas student newspaper. Their Orange Bowl coverage is available here.
