Ryan Sholin, the Invisible Inkling, starts a new job today at Gatehouse Media. He’s going to be working with Howard Owens, who has no cool moniker for his weblog :-). It’s an interesting part of what is sure to be a powerhouse Gatehouse web team. Read Ryan’s announcement here.
One sentence struck me in Ryan’s post:
A note to j-school students: Blogging about what you’re passionate about gets you work that you’re passionate about.
This is a cool part of networking that wasn’t available when I was starting out in journalism. If I’m interested in databases, for instance, I can look up journalists who work with databases and read their weblogs. I imagine there are digital managers all over the country scouring the journalism blogosphere for talented young journalists to hire. And if you’re interviewing or applying for a position, having a well-conceived weblog will definitely be a plus, IMHO.
Another side note, I’m happy to say that I’ve been able to interview both of these men for this weblog, and they both had important things to say. I might suggest you take the time to read their interviews if you haven’t already: Howard Owens and Ryan Sholin.
