College newspapers doing video

Megan Taylor asked today if I could point her to some college newspapers who were doing “good” video. I was able to quickly put together a list of a few colleges who were doing video online. I qualified my list with this: I’m not vouching for the “good” quality of all the videos presented on these sites. These are colleges that I know are doing video regularly right now. The quality varies, just as does the quality of written articles and photography. #
So here’s the list. If your college newspaper is doing video and you’re not on this list, drop me an e-mail or put something in the comments and I’ll update this list as necessary. #

The GW Hatchet just started doing video in June, and they've been updating regularly (goal is at least one video and one podcast per week.) This also corresponds to a completely redesigned webpage which places multimedia at the top, to the right of the masthead. There is also embedded video in the center of the homepage. http://www.gwhatchet.com. Check us out and let us know what you all think. I only manage the corporation, I don't serve an advisory role, so any help you can give is appreciated. I'd love some feedback I can give to our new multimedia editor.

That's why we don't use it. It gives priority to national/AP video, with local buried somewhere. Instead, we use Brightcove and work it into our CP-based site.

Washington Square News, NYU's daily paper, started doing video in January. Check out http://www.nyunews.com/wsnmedia/ for the beta version of our multimedia site (it's missing a loading screen so give it a second while it loads).

Brian, don't forget about the Optimist at Abilene Christian University. We're in our third year of producing news videos with our own video staff. We started with a home-grown MySQL/PHP database serving 2-3 vids a week Two years later it died a horrible death. We're currently publishing at http://www.youtube.com/acuvideo while searching for a CMS solution that best meets our needs. I'll let you know how that turns out.

We're just getting back to doing the video, had some difficulties getting things started for the new semester.
As far as the new CP Video Player is concerned, it does our campus content on the front page, although I don't know how their algorithm does it but its really random. Some days you'll see it on the front page in the video box everytime and some days you'll only the AP/National videos.

Brain, please add The Seahawk (http://www.theseahawk.org) to the list of college newspapers who are doing video. I can't vouch for the "good" part either but it is a learning process and I am sure there will be improvement with every production we put together.

FYI: We are hosting our video's on our FTP, full frame aspect ratio and linking via html. Look for consistent video news packages beginning mid-September as we are recruiting and training qualified staff.
The Corsair at Pensacola Junior College is beginning to do video. We have a couple of pieces in the video player on our CP site but we're not happy with the quality yet. Still learning how to compress it, but hopefully Premiere Pro CS3 will help.
