Va. Tech updates
April 17, 2007 in Va. Tech Shooting
I’m going to use this post as needed today to update with any information or links that would be of interest to college media outlets. #
- Here’s today’s front page from the Collegiate Times. And here is their list of confirmed dead.
- The Roanoke Times’ print coverage in PDF format is available here.
- Joe Gisondi: On a day like this, sports are put in perspective.
- Lots of college media outlets should be localizing this story. Here’s some links from the Daily Illini (here and here) and EHCWired (here, here, here, and here). Emory & Henry is located 90 miles from Va. Tech and we have many students with close ties to VT.
- TCU Daily Skiff: Virginia Tech Massacre: Campus security analyzed following campus shooting.
- Daily Collegian (Penn State): here, here, here, and here. (see comments from Steve Clancy below).
- The University of Oklahoma was locked down earlier today. Details here. (via Lori Brooks).
- For feeds to stories from papers that publish online using College Publisher, there’s the Syndicated College News page, which feeds through individual student newspapers, but it’s the same material on all of them (via Eric Jacobs).
- InsideVandy.com: Vanderbilt begins to respond to Virginia Tech shootings. Also, blogs here
- Newsdesigner.com has a roundup of various front pages from Virginia and around the nation.
- Indiana Daily Student: IU Reacts to Virginia Shooting. (via David Adams)
- Threats rattle 3 universities, 2 schools AP via Yahoo!
- Nevada Sagebrush (UN-Reno): Shootings at Va. Tech draw UNR response, and Texting could have helped in Virginia Tech mass shooting. (via Amy Koeckes)
Here at Penn State's Daily Collegian, our reporters were able to talk to a lot of students at Virginia Tech with Penn State connections. It's pretty amazing how many people from our school knew people there and our reporters did a great job of digging them up. I have also been struck by the immediate reaction of the Facebook to these events.

Personally my thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Virginia Tech community, especially all those whose loved ones were killed or injured.
Our thoughts and prayers are with those at Virginia Tech also.
I wanted to email the staff to let them know what a great job they are doing, but didn't want to clog the email. I'm sure its still very hectic.
I am truly impressed at the coverage by the Collegiate Times. It rivals, and in most cases, tops, the national media. I have been using the site as my first click for updates.
And I have seen the EIC on CNN several times as one of the go-to people interviewed at the campus. She is a picture of composure amid chaos.
Our thoughts are with the staff also as you sift through the information and misinformation in order to bring us the news. Great job.

For those looking for more student reaction I would also recommend reviewing the forums on the individual daily jolt campus sites. There have been 1,000's of student posts from many, many different schools. Clarkson U speaks out starting at "Get a Grip" and many posts previous to that http://clarkson.dailyjolt.com/forum/index.html There are lots of school forums if you are interested; http://www.dailyjolt.com/schools/
