New media skills = better job prospects

Attention all students! #
If for no other reason, learn new media skills for increased employment opportunties. There is a sweet spot in the journalism job market right now for good journalists with multimedia skills. Demand, at least for now, outstrips the supply of good digital storytellers. #
Angela Grant taught our video sessions at last weekend’s CICM new media workshop. #
A 2006 graduate of UT-Austin’s J-School, one of Grant’s first interviews was with The New York Times. She ended up taking a job as a multimedia producer at The San Antonio Express-News. Not a bad gig for a newly minted grad. #

We had a yearbook student from Ole Miss come to Nashville and the first thing he did when he got back was produce a video story about their (the entire Ole Miss gang's) trip to CICM. He added some music and toyed around with the video tools, included some photos and showed it to everyone.
Excellent work?
No, but keep in mind he'd never even imagined he could use video until he took your class.
I'd classify that in the impressive category.
The future is, indeed, bright—and the future is here. At least at Hastings College. We have been graduating students with the qualifications and skills Angela described in Nashville for at least two years. One 2006 grad has Angela's job at the Grand Island Independent in Grand Island, Nebraska. They'd never had a multimedia edition until they hired Anthony last spring.
