The combination of a very skilled student programmer and a Django/design veteran who just happened to be in our fair city for the fall, the University of Tennessee School of Journalism & Electronic Media is now in the second semester of publishing TennesseeJournalist.com (tnjn.com for short) *without* using the Ellington layer on top of Django. Jim Stovall (faculty adviser, project manager and star recruiter) dubbed Johnny's system "Satchmo," in keeping with the Django-Ellington jazz theme.

Anyhow, check it out: http://tnjn.com

This is independent of the UT Daily Beacon newspaper, which has its own online edition at http://dailybeacon.utk.edu

The Cypress Chronicle has had an original web news site since 1998, and has won awards every year since for it. The philosophy of the convergence journalism at Cypress College for CyChron.Com is "All students work in all media at any time from anywhere. We've streamed our public access TV since 2002. We've perfected backpack journalism while teaching study abroad journalism classes in Prague, CZ in fall 2005. Today, we no longer cable cast from Time Warner, but Podcast from our own campus newsroom.

But we have beem so frustrated by the CMS--particularly College Publisher to which CP's merger with Digital Partners forced us last spring. CP "puts your newspaper online :-(. We have to use "bailing wire and spit" to continue as a multimedia news operation currently.

This article has made me aware of Ellington and I've already asked for a salesman to contact me. Is there anyone else out there that makes a real multi-media web news software?

This is a great post, especially for those of us struggling against a newsroom that is still 99% print-focused. I've added this link to my arsenal. They STILL see the website as a electronic version of the paper and moan and groan if they HAVE to publish a web-only story due to space constraints...

Thanks for the great resource Bryan (and happy belated birthday and congrats on the new job). Wow, everything's coming up Bryan this month!
