NYT profiles Vox blogging tool

The New York Times has a piece today about Vox: So, Who Says That a Blog Has to Blare? #
I like Vox. I signed on with it in June, when they first announced the beta (here’s my blog). It has some neat social networking features and easy integration with other tools like Flickr, Amazon and YouTube. It’s also one of the first blog tools to really take advantage of AJAX, where you don’t have to refresh the web page when you perform a function. The service also lets you set up levels of access to your writing – which is the key factor in the Times piece. #
In the recent Nebraska workshop, everyone set up Vox blogs for themselves as part of the training. I tried to do this last September in New Mexico, but the service was still invitation only, so I went with Blogger instead. #
I actually encourage student journalists to set up their own weblogs apart from their college media, just for the experience if nothing else. But services like Vox let you engage in conversation and community outside your own. #

I use VOX — I set up a blog for a high school travel group I am leading called People to People Student Ambassdors. Every student has a blog. So does every teacher-leader. We have main blog where all of the official announcements go. The students and leaders know each other better through VOX conversation and personal profiles — and they have a place to find all of those meeting announcemtns and assignments they forgot! Some have Myspace, and they'd prefer we use that — but parents are leery of Myspace. When we started meeting in late fall, VOX was new and offered privacy controls they liked.
I'm trying to get my j-students to embrace it, but FaceBook's their thing.
