One of our goals at CICM is to provide relevant information to college journalists and their advisers. I’ve decided to take up beat writing for the CICM blog. My job is to cover economic issues we face. I will also be tracking industry trends. Knowing what’s going in the profession is something we need to pay attention to.

For those college media programs with multiple media outlets, it may be time to look at restructuring seperate sales staffs into one that sales across all platforms. I know some schools are already doing this.

CBS has developed a cross-platform sales unit called RIOT (radio, Internet, outdoor and television). Dodge is their first experimental rat. It will be interesting to see if this convergence of ad sales is effective for CBS’s bottom line.

The stock price for CBS has risen about 25% in the last year and analysts (S&P et al) rate the stock as a mixed hold/buy recommendation.
