U.K. group prepares online training module

Martin Stabe points to this report about the National Council for the Training of Journalists in the U.K. They will be adding a training module to address online skills. Journalists who pass the NCTJ exams are certified by the body. I’m not exactly sure what the certification means. Perhaps Martin will fill us in.

The crux of the module:

Training includes original reporting for online publications, adapting print for the web, writing for platforms to include SMS, news tickers and e-mail bulletins, publishing video and audio reports, using content management systems and learning about techniques such as reader polls, message board, reader comment and blogging.

More to the trend of training journalists for their online future.

Leaders of U.K. journalism groups agree:

Johnston Press group editorial development executive David Rowell said: “The central point for me is that we want all our journalists to have these skills as an integral part of their NCTJ training.”

Brien Beharrell, of the Newbury Weekly News, said: “Multi-skills as the norm is where we, as an industry, are heading.”

Hands-on training in the U.S. will be available March 29-31 at our first new media workshop in Nashville, Tenn. Click here for details.
