At the end of March, we’re going to be putting on our first intensive new media workshop for college media. I am so pumped about this workshop! If you’re a student or an adviser, you really should come. We’ve already filled up 38 of 90 slots. Read more details below the fold.
The information page for the workshop is here.
You can click on the link to read some of the general details about the conference and register online. This post (which will be updated as we confirm speakers and instructors) is meant to fill in some of the blanks on the workshop page.
Basic overview:
Here’s a PDF of the schedule: workshop schedule
The workshop will last from Thursday evening, March 29, through Saturday afternoon, March 31. Attendance is limited to 90 people for the main workshop and 20 for the advertising seminar. We did this specifically to limit the size so everyone could focus on the instruction. Words that are guiding our planning: hands-on and intensive.
The 90 attendees will be divided up into three groups. The groups will rotate through three 3-hour sessions on video, audio, and online journalism. There will be a fourth time slot - Friday afternoon - devoted to break-out sessions. Here, attendees will be able to pick from a variety of offerings that align with more traditional conference presentations (i.e., about 1 hour).
The 20 advertising seminar attendees will stay in their section for the entire conference.
Additional information:
Thursday night will be a dinner with a performance by “Freedom Sings.”
Friday will feature a keynote address by Jennifer Carroll of Gannett. Friday night, attendees will be able to meet with instructors informally to network and get more information.
Instructors:
The trainers for the workshop are veterans of the news business. We will have a crew to assist with each of the three break-out sessions to help attendees along. We will also have a technology table set up at the beginning of the conference to ensure that everyone’s computer is set up and ready to go.
Among the folks we have slotted to help teach:
Jason Levine, an Adobe technology evangelist whose specialty is audio and video;
Lee Clontz, an instructor at Emory University who formerly worked with CNN-SI, New York Times, and other Web sites; and
Angela Grant, a multimedia producer for the San Antonio Express-News and recent University of Texas graduate. She’s also a blogger: In the Circle.
Jack Lail, managing editor for multimedia at the Knoxville News-Sentinel.
More to come …
For the breakout sessions, we have: a representative from College Publisher, who’ll lead a session on using their content management system; and Rick Burnes from Fanieul Media, who’ll showcase how to use the Atlas maps mashup tool. And an expert on Internet law from the First Amendment Center.
Others will be announced as we firm up the details.
Location: The workshop is being held at the First Amendment Center in Nashville. The entire building is WiFi enabled.
Cost: The entire conference is $149 with an early registration. Late registration (assuming there are spaces left) will be $199. You can register online with PayPal and a credit card, or you can register and send a check by mail.
Hotels: You can see a map of some Nashville hotels at this link. We do not have a “conference hotel” for this particular workshop. But you should book hotel rooms early, as there’s some sort of festival happening in Nashville the same weekend.
