Coming Monday: Career Day

I’m beginning to become a believer in synchronicity.

Friday, I interviewed Howard Owens on IM. Literally one hour after I finished interviewing him, Mindy McAdams writes this post about careers in journalism. Saturday, I get a response to an e-mail I sent out from Rob Curley. Yes, Rob Curley of the Washington Post. So this weekend, I’ve been sitting on some career advice for future journalists that should be read by every college media adviser and student journalist and posted on every newsroom bulletin board.

To be sure, the advice Owens and Curley give is not “new” advice. It’s something we’ve been writing about for the last year (as has McAdams). But these are industry leaders who have a hand in hiring new journalists. If you don’t listen to them, you need to reconsider your career choice.

Monday morning, watch for Howard Owens and Rob Curley with advice you need to read.

(aside: this is a lesson to student journalists who are learning to blog. Learn when your readers are visiting. We have very low traffic on the weekends. If I put these blog posts up on Saturday or Sunday, the readership would likely be small. Posting on Monday increases the chances that they’ll be read.)
