Simple(r) database apps

David Studinski, EIC at Ball State, queries me about database applications that are easier to use than MySQL or the other variants of the SQL database. Off the top of my head, these are three options. (disclaimer: I’ve only used the first one and I think I might have a Dabble DB account that I never used.)

  • ZohoCreator - I used this for the Student Multimedia Examples and submission form. It’s free to use and relatively easy to set up, although I didn’t really get into styling the results.
  • DabbleDB - pricing plans - academic prices. You can sign up for a free 30-day trial to see if it’s what you’re interested in.
  • Caspio Bridge - pricing plans Another option that has a cost associated, unless you have a very small database need. This might be something to experiment with, but you’ll have the Caspio brand on your site. I understand that some publishers are using this currently. (UPDATE 3-08-07: I attempted to set up a Caspio database today and received this message: “To sign in to Caspio Bridge, you must use Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 (or higher) with session cookies and JavaScript enabled. The Caspio Bridge administrative interface is 100% browser-based, and requires features and capabilities only available in Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher. The latest version of IE can be freely downloaded at Microsoft’s Download Center.” As such, I cannot recommend this application at this time. Even if I used Windows XP (which is also required), I wouldn’t use IE6 for anything. Period. - bryan)The Caspio Bridge administrative interface will soon support more browsers in an upcoming release.
