Using “the soft sell”

David McHenry explains how they’ve convinced reporters at Bakersfield.com to shoot video. And they’ve had a pretty good success rate:

Over the past year the web team here at Bakersfield.com has helped turn our reporting staff into a lean, mean video-shooting machine. We have 20+ reporters on our staff and I am happy to say that every single person has shot video and many (probably more than hald) have edited video as well.

His advice:

  • One-on-one training
  • Don’t fear failure
  • Share successes
  • Embrace early adopters
  • and Make it fun.

Those sound like excellent points to consider as you’re preparing a college media staff for multimedia work. Everyone’s still in the learning stage right now, and those types of pointers help us remember that this is a “new thing” we’re dealing with. Thanks for sharing, David.
