What’s Next for Newspapers? Discussion

Wilson Lowery at the University of Alabama has set up a message board for people to discuss the future of newspapers. The question he has posed for What’s Next for Newspapers? is this:

Once upon a time newspapers held a central place in the civic and social lives of their communities. Today it’s no longer clear that this is the case. Weekday circulation has inched steadily down since the mid-1980s, household penetration has been dropping since the ‘50s, and younger Americans are increasingly turning to other types of media. Do you think there really is a substantial disconnect between journalists and readers? If so, what do you think can be done to reconnect? And what are the implications for journalism education?
